THE RULES

How to play floor is lava

Step on every blue tile to clear the level. Stand on green to rest. Stay off red, because red is lava and costs your team a life. Clear every level before 25 minutes run out. On Epic Lava, the usual first game, your team shares 6 lives a level, and losing them all restarts the level.

THE TILES

Three colours, three jobs

Green is safe

Nothing happens when you stand on green. Use it to rest and plan the next move.

Blue clears the level

Every blue tile has to be stepped on. When the last one goes out, the level is done.

Red is lava

Each time someone touches red, the team loses a life. Every level is laid out differently.

LIVES, LEVELS AND THE CLOCK

Beat the 25-minute clock

  1. Pick a game. The game decides how many levels there are and how many lives you get on each one.
  2. The first level lights up. Clear the blue tiles while staying off the red.
  3. Every touch of red costs a life. Lose all of them and that level starts again.
  4. Clear a level and the next one lights up. Each level is different.
  5. Clear the last level before the clock hits zero and you've beaten the game.

Lives are counted per level. Most games give your team 6.

Each game gives you 25 minutes. Most games give your team 6 lives a level.

PICK YOUR GAME

Pick your difficulty

There's no easy, normal or hard setting. Instead there are lots of games, and each one sets the number of levels and lives. Every game has its own leaderboard.

Casual

10 lives a level

Our most forgiving game, made for kids and first-timers. Ten lives means plenty of room for mistakes.

Epic Lava

6 lives a level

The standard game: 25 levels in 25 minutes. Most groups start here.

Hell Lava and the rest

6 lives a level

Hell Lava is for teams who have beaten Epic Lava, and there are plenty more games at this level, including a playlist our team put together.

99 Lava

5 lives a level

99 levels and only 5 lives on each. It's for teams who want a real challenge, and most book two sessions back to back to try to finish.

TIPS FROM THE FLOOR

Five tips for your first game

  1. Call out the blue

Shout which blue tiles you're taking. Two people diving for the same tile is how lives get lost.

  2. Split the floor

Give each player a corner or a side. The room is 5.5 by 5 metres, so nobody has to cover all of it.

  3. Use the green

Green tiles are safe. Stop there, look, then move.

  4. Move together

When the safe path is narrow, jump in sync and keep your arms in.

  5. Start with Epic Lava

Get the hang of it on Epic Lava, then try Hell Lava or 99 Lava next time.

WHAT TO WEAR

Wear covered shoes

The tiles sense your feet, so your shoes matter. Wear covered shoes and clothes you can jump in. Crocs, slippers, high heels and running shoes with thick soles don't work. There are lockers for your bags.

  • Covered shoes, thin soles
  • Lockers for bags
  • 25 minutes a game
  • Lives depend on the game

Questions about the rules

How many lives do you get in floor is lava?

It depends on the game. Casual gives 10 lives a level, 99 Lava gives 5, and most other games give 6. Lose them all and the level restarts.

Can you choose easy or hard?

Not as a setting. You choose a game instead, and the game sets how many levels there are and how many lives you get.

What happens if we finish a game early?

If you clear Epic Lava with time left, you can take on another game in the time you have left.

Is there a leaderboard?

Yes. Every game has its own leaderboard.
